Learn to Fly!
Ultralight
aircraft allow for a pleasurable, less restricted, inexpensive
way to fly. Take an introductory flight today and see what fun
it can be to cruise the Nova Scotia coastline at 60 mph from an
open-air cockpit. You can't beat the view. There is no
obligation to continue on with lessons. You will need to sign a
self-declared medical to show you are in good health and be a
minimum of 14 years of age (You can download the medical at http://www.tc.gc.ca/civilaviation/general/personnel/apps.htm
). You will also need to fill out a waiver, click on
"Liability Waiver" above
To
attain an Ultra-light Pilot Permit you will need a minimum
of 10 hours of instructional airtime and 20 hours of ground
school. Do not assume you can get the 10 hours all in one go, as
it takes some time to accommodate for weather windows and
scheduling; plus you benefit from some down-time to think about
your past flights and prepare for future lessons. Also, assume
that 10 hours is only the legal minimum and most students will
take 12 to 14 hours to acquire the skills necessary to fly.
Ground school is usually organized in the winter months and the
cost is shared by the students taking it. At the end of the
course, and after a minimum of 5 flight hours, you will write a
Transport Canada test. An ultralight permit allows you to fly
any aircraft with a gross take-off weight of 1200lbs or less and
a stall speed of 45mph or less. (Note: a 'stall' is not an
engine failure, it is the point at which the airspeed is too
slow for the wings to maintain flight). You can fly during good
visibility and in daylight hours. Some classes of airspace
around busy airports are closed to UL's, but the rest of Canada
below 18,000 feet is available!
It
is recommended that, if you go beyond an introductory flight and
take the full course and ground school, you be serious about
acquiring an aircraft and becoming a pilot. The course and the
test are fairly demanding. As we fly exclusively on floats, it
is also recommended that you get some wheel-flying time with
another instructor (we can refer you).
If
you already have a higher category of aircraft license, you will
need 5 hours of airtime including 2 hours solo and a minimum of
20 take-offs and landings (10 as sole occupant).
You will not need to write an exam.
We
can also provide the training towards your Passenger Carrying
Rating.
Do you want to
give someone the gift of flight?
Gift certificates are available for a 1 hr introductory flight.
The
Lunenburg County Flight School is located at Church Lake, in
Newburne, Nova Scotia. Church Lake is
off Exit 11 on the 103 at Mahone Bay. Go about 12 minutes inland
from Exit 11 towards the Lunenburg County Winery. Turn Left at
Burnside Drive and go to house number 93. Within a reasonable
distance, I can fly to your location as well.
